Detailed Itinerary

This relaxing excursion highlights Halifax’s multifaceted character, taking in its numerous museums, churches and institutions of higher learning, as well as its gracious parks, notable monuments and richly historic buildings.

From the cruise pavilion your routing will take you through the peninsula of Halifax to St. Margaret’s Bay Road and on to the Lighthouse Route. This beautiful coastal drive that takes you past picturesque coastal villages and inlets. En route your guide will talk bout the Maritime history of the area and how it has shaped the culture and economy of the province.

Soon you will arrive in the rugged fishing community of Peggy’s cove. With its breathtaking location on a narrow, coastal inlet characterized by wave-worn granite boulders and crashing surf, it’s easy to see why this charming little village is perhaps Canada’s most photographed site. The lighthouse still serves as a beacon to fishermen, located at Peggy’s Point. Free time will be provided to explore the granite coast and local shops.

Your tour will include a drive up to Halifax Citadel National Historic Site for a photo stop at this majestic hilltop fortress. Built in 1828, the Citadel functioned as the British Imperial bastion of control in North America for more than 75 years. The crown jewel of the most advanced British military defense installations of its day, the Citadel continues to command an unparalleled vista of the beautiful harbor and city.

From the Citadel, the tour winds its way through bustling downtown Halifax, along the waterfront, and to the North End site of the Halifax Explosion. The famous explosion was caused by a collision in 1917 between two ships in the Halifax harbor, one a French munitions ship, that leveled the North End of Halifax killing or injuring thousands. A stop will also be made at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, location of some of the 150 victims of the Titanic that are buried in Halifax. Your Driver-Guide will explain the connection Halifax had with the sinking of this ship. Before returning to your ship you will travel around the university area of Halifax and Public Gardens.
