Tour Itinerary

Join Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation for a two hour educational and fun experience. When you arrive on site in the community of Scotchfort (27 kms from Charlottetown) you will begin with a Smudging Ceremony. While optional, this activity is a traditional indigenous purification ceremony. It uses burned sage to create a cleansing smoke bath that drives away negative energies and restores balance. This ceremony is an integral practice of the Mi’kmaw community and an excellent way to begin your experience.

With the assistance of two local Mi’kmaw Knowledge Keepers you will then be instructed on how to create a beaded lanyard. During the lesson you will also be learning the significance and symbolism of the sacred colours and the circle that the craft will create. The Knowledge Keepers will open your eyes to their community, it’s history, and why the education and sharing of their practices is so important to them. Once your lanyard is complete you will be offered traditional bannock (a locally made bread product similar to a biscuit) that will be served with some jam, butter, or molasses. This is the perfect time for questions or more storytelling by your Knowledge Keepers. The community will also have local Mi’kmaw craft for purchase (Canadian cash only accepted for the purchase of crafts).
