The Confederation Bridge is a 12.9 kilometer (8 mile) long bridge that connects the province of Prince Edward Island to the province of New Brunswick. It is the longest bridge crossing ice-covered water, and took four years of construction before opening on May 31st, 1997. The decision to build the bridge sparked great debate among islanders. Before the bridge was built ferries would travel back and forth along the Northumberland Strait carrying passengers and cargo for the mainland. Many farmers, fisherman, and tourism operators were concerned about how the bridge would affect year round access to the mainland and their way of life. Eventually it was decided that the debate would be settled by a provincial vote where Islanders officially voted yes to begin construction.
The Confederation Bridge is a well-recognized landmark that visitors from all over come to see and drive across. Passengers will visit the base of the bridge on our South Shore Magic and Confederation Bridge Private Tour and our Amazing PEI Experience Private Tour.
