(Stratford, PE) August 16, 2018 – At the heart of Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation’s mission is to advance their band through education and partnerships. In this spirit the band has partnered with Target Tours Atlantic to share some of their culture with tourists in an experiential and fun environment.
Starting at the end of August 2018 tours will be offered in the indigenous community of Scotchfort by local Knowledge Keepers. The tour departs from Charlottetown with a Target Tours Atlantic Driver-Guide providing background on the history of the band. During the visit, guests will be welcomed in to an authentic tipi and experience a smudging ceremony by an elder. While in the tipi the Knowledge Keeper will share with the guests their medicines, how the band functions, as well as share the Seven Sacred Teachings. The Teachings involve all aspects of emotional, spiritual, physical, and intellectual development allowing the visitors to develop a deeper understanding of First Nations communities. At the end of the tour the guests will enjoy bannock, a type of bread served with jam, butter and molasses, as well as an opportunity for a Q&A with the Knowledge Keeper. During the return to Charlottetown the Target Tours Atlantic Driver-Guide will take visitors to the North Shore to enjoy some classic Island sightseeing.
“There are no better storytellers than our First Nations people” says president of Target Tours Atlantic John Dunphy. “We are excited to assist them with sharing the story of their unique history and culture.” Jacqueline Skinner, operations manager for Target Tours Atlantic, adds “Working with the Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation has also been a great experience for us. We had to take some time to better understand their community and consult with one another in order to develop the best product possible for visitors.”
Chief Brian Francis of the Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation shares similar sentiments. “Considering education is a pillar of our mission this partnership was a natural fit. We are looking forward to incorporating a tourism component to our ever-growing list of services on the reserve and are excited to do it in partnership with Target Tours Atlantic. We think this tour, and other experiences that we plan to offer in spring of 2019, will be excellent additions to tourism options on PEI for both independent visitors and cruise passengers alike.”
The Seven Sacred Teachings Tour is slated to begin August 30th, 2018 departing from Charlottetown at a cost of $150 per person for a 4 hour tour. It will run for select dates until the end of September 2018. Tours will once again be offered in the spring of 2019 on a regular schedule as well as additional tour opportunities in the community.
